ISBN buy/free?

The dreaded ISBN.
If you write a book, you will need one of the International Standard Book Numbers.

But if you only want to publish on KDP (Kindle direct publishing/the self publishing arm) an Amazon company then they can supply you with their own ISBN which designates that they are the publisher of your book. They are Free!
The Amazon ISBN is a good start. If you want to be on Amazon, use their product. The reading public don't really give a brass rah-zoo about the origin of your ISBN.

BUT
Ingram spark want you to have your own. So you need to purchase some ISBNs.
the Australian site for Bowker link.
10 for $au88.  look here

Each incarnation of your book requires an ISBN.
You can use the Amazon ISBN that they gave you from KDP for ISpark, but you need to un-click/ don't select ,  expanded distribution, as you upload your product. Then you need to write to Amazon,  and ask them to release the ISBN.
Buy your own. Then you have two products.
BUT
to have two of the very same book will confuse Amazon, which ISpark supply. So what did I do?
I decided to make a whole new edition of my books. 16 in all.
I have called them pocket editions. They are smaller. They are cute. They will sit side by side with the Amazon version, with out competing. I used InDesign to format them for ISpark.
You need a bar code.
there are numerous sites that convert your ISBN to a barcode for the back of the book. link here . or you can purchase a barcode with your Thorpe-Bowker ISBN. Just a choice on how to spend your money!
DIY self publishing is a journey. Add another string to your bow and learn to do it all.
